I received this question the other day and I started to reply and then realized that the answer would be really useful for many of my readers…

“I follow your regular updates with interest. I’m doing some work on goal setting at the moment both personally and for clients. One of the personal goals I’m toying with is the idea of hiring a personal sales mentor/coach. I was interested to know if this was an area that you had an opinion on?”

Do I have an opinion? I think all my readers will know that I must have.

To try and help, I have broken the question down into several sub-questions…

Who should hire a sales coach?

- Salespeople who want to increase their skills, their sales strategies and their sales approach.

- Non-salespeople who want to ensure that their sales systems and processes are the most effective that they can be.

- Sales managers and team leaders who need to recruit, manage and motivate sales teams, both small and large.

- Sales leaders and business owners looking to develop powerful sales systems and productive sales teams.

When should I hire a sales coach?

Better question. Now, this is where I disagree with many people because many people would say, “All of the time!” Not surprisingly, most of them have coaching services to sell!

For many people, constant sales coaching loses it zing and may suffer from co-dependency issues. Personally, I think most if not all people involved with sales would benefit from having a coach or coaches at times but not all of the time. Maybe most of the time but certainly not all.

Coaching is great for salespeople looking to break through barriers, stretch for new sales goals, get unstuck orwho are taking on new projects.

Here are some classic examples where a sales coach can help.

- Setting new goals, life plans and strategic direction.

- Setting out a sales and new client acquisition strategy.

- Developing new sales skills and sales processes, practising sales techniques and approaches and trying out new methods.

- Creating realistic systems and plans for achieving unrealistic goals.

- Getting out of comfort zones and motivation traps and re-motivating and re-energizing salespeople not firing on all cylinders.

When should I not hire a sales coach?

- When you don’t want one.

- When you are looking for someone to sympathise with your “plight”.

- When you don’t believe in them.

- When you want them to do the work for you. – When it’s forced upon you.

- When you don’t want to hear the truth (although this is, of course, just when you do need one!)

What are my alternatives to using a sales coach?

Sometimes there aren’t any but sometimes there are many options available and all of them may well be right at one stage or another of your sales career.

Here are just a few alternatives…

- Self-learn from your own experiences.

- Read a book, listen to an audio, watch a DVD, join a sales progamme.

- Set up a Sales Champions group.

- Buddy up with a friend.

- Attend a seminar or a training course.

How do I choose my sales coach?

- Do some research, join some newsletters and watch some videos from sales coaches.

- Get referrals and advice from friends and colleagues who have used a sales coach.

- Ask some sales coaches some questions and facilitate a few conversations.

- Find someone you can trust and who has credibility and the credentials to help you.

- Make sure that they challenge you… this is not about blowing hot air up your rear end.

- Choose someone who inspires you.

- And feel free to use different coaches for specialist situations. This is not a one-size-fits-all scenario.

Will you be my sales coach Gavin?

Great question. I don’t know yet. For many years, I have wrestled with the constant challenge of not having enough time to do everything that needs to be done. I only have limited time and only a small amount of that is allocated to very (very) committed clients who want to achieve extraordinary results in their sales and in their lives. If you have a desire to be average or, worse still, mediocre I’m not interested.

With the increasing competitiveness of businesses around the world, there has been a corresponding increase in the requirement for business coaching. Both major and small businesses are recognizing the fact that competent business coaching actually works. Business coaching helps to create an environment conducive to the general growth of the business enterprise by training it to make adaptations according to the changes that occur. Even a few years back, it was only a very limited number of businesses that utilized business coaching as an instrument of augmenting their business. Statistics today show that in the US nearly 58 percent of small and medium sized businesses are using business coaching in order to benefit their companies.

Business enterprises are increasingly resorting to utilizing business coaching, as it is a cost-efficient way of achieving results. It assists in developing the skills of the workforce, which results in enhanced performance. People who get the benefit of business coaching have the opportunity of receiving guidance related to the difficulties they are confronted with in their daily lives. Business coaching provides fresh perspectives about the everyday activities of business and facilitates the improvements needed in systems, methods and procedures.

Most companies that have opted for business coaching have reportedly benefited from increased productivity and better work quality. It has been observed that when people receive coaching, there is an improvement in relationships within the team, which in turn results in better quality and enhanced productivity. Many business enterprises weigh productivity by the amount of hard work put in by individual employees; however, this approach does not take into account the significance of synergy and work quality.

Often, in their rush to get their work done, employees have a tendency of disregarding quality, and this results in others having to redo work already done. Increased quality and productivity are actually dependent upon employees making a connection between their individual needs with that of the organization they belong to. Employees that find satisfaction in their work environment work smarter and harder and are an asset to the company. Coaching not only helps individual workers discover their worth but also assists them in attaining their highest performance as a part of a team.

Business coaching also aids in bringing about a thorough understanding of the basic principles of business. Coaching is thought to be the best means of bringing about change, development and growth in individuals, organizations and groups. Coaching is considered to be the most effective means of unleashing, developing and maximizing the potential that each individual inherently has within himself or herself. It serves to attain goals for professional and business success.

Customer service, for instance, is directly related to the level of quality as well as the rate of productivity. When there is improved quality and productivity, complaints made by customers lessen significantly. Conversely, when quality falls below standard, it leads to an increase in complaints made by customers and loss of sales. Coaching also aids in bringing about reduction in cost. Companies that facilitate their employees being coached get back about six times the amount they invest in the coaching programs.

Business coaching is about dealing with human relationships and issues about people that occur commonly across all business sectors. Coaching enables making the company a more satisfactory environment to work in. Plus, it also aids in improving communication, working relationships, and decision making processes. The other things it deals with are building sound teams, improving the working conditions, and decreasing the levels of stress – all of which results in the satisfaction of employees in the organization.

By helping employees deal with their stress, coaching enables them to cope with both their personal and professional lives. And when working relationships are improved it indirectly enhances team spirit. In addition, when there is a high level of satisfaction amongst employees, it results in lowering the turnover of employees in the company. Coaching assists people to recognize their inherent strengths and guides them to use them to the fullest. Thus, business coaching processes are not only about growth, but are also designed to modify behavior patterns and enhance skills. Business coaching works because both teams and individuals experience the beneficial effects because leadership qualities are fine-tuned, and change, creativity and innovation are encouraged.

* If you are looking for a specialized Life Coach, such as a Career Coach, Sales Coach, or Executive Coach, verify that the candidate Life Coach has sufficient experience in that niche subject

* Verify that the personal life coach has finished advanced training and has earned certification at least one institution that the International Coach Federation (ICF) recognizes. This federation allows you to distinguish which Life Coaching schools are beneficial, and which are useless

* Talk to several life coaches and use one that you seem to connect with

* Find out if the person listens well and fully comprehends your objectives

* Remember this is about you, and a good life coach will make this about you and what you want, not what they want for you

You should also request that your life coach explains precisely the services they can offer, and the cost for those services. Furthermore, learn about what type of commitment that personal life coach requests. It is wise to avoid life coaches who require advance payment for long-term programs.

Select someone who is a member of the International Coach Federation (ICF). ICF governs professional life coaches, so professional ethics and practice rules preside over members of that particular group.

Top performers in every area from sports through arts to business have coaches to help them reach and maintain the highest levels of performance.

The benefits of coaching

Just imagine a combination of your best friend, your most cherished teacher, your most hard-nosed manager, and your most positive guru available and committed to your personal development.

How much more will you achieve when these resources are available to you?

A coach will provide you all of this and more.

Seems a bit like counseling or therapy?

There are superficial similarities between coaching and therapy but there are fundamental differences. Coaching essentially is about commitment and development in the present moment to achieve future goals and outcomes.

Many forms of therapy are about fixing problems from the past. In coaching you might discuss past issues but this is only in the context of future goals.

Are there different forms of coaching?

There are many different names for different forms of coaching. Lots of coaches and coach schools have marketing names for different types of coaching. In broad terms you can fit most forms of coaching into five categories.

Peak Performance Coaching

This is very common with sports where a coach is generally a specialist in a particular sport. Peak performance coaches also appear in business, a sales coach for example.

Often peak performance coaches will have specialist skills such as NLP or Hypnosis. Many coaches have benefited from a good NLP Training Course.

You will find coaches working in markets that they have credibility in. For example I get a lot of clients from the coaching, training and NLP community simply because they are circles I move in and I am known in them. As a result I have more experience and reference clients in these Coaching is usually about personal discovery, so coaches do not need skills and experience from the context they are coaching in. markets. But since coaching is more about the client’s personal exploration and goals it is not necessary for coaches to have experience of the context.

Life Coaching

Life coaches cover a broader area and might be looking at different areas of a client’s life and their relationship to each other.

Executive Coaching

Executives coaching is usually about the challenges and issues of leadership and can cover anything from personal style, stress reduction to finding your passion for the role. Lots of executive coaches will use a personality profiling tool as a vehicle for their client’s to explore and develop their outcomes.

Special events Coaching

Some coaches will specialize in a niche area like presentations or writing and publishing books. Often they have specific experience, skills or qualifications in the area and they may not conform to traditional coaching models because of their ‘insider’ knowledge.

Accelerated Success BreakThrough Coaching Sessions

This is a highly specialized area of coaching involving leading edge psychological, NLP and Hypnosis tools to facilitate great changes very quickly. There are only a small number of coaches skilled in this area and also not all clients are suitable for this approach. Hence there is a lot of pre-qualification before using this form of coaching. For those it suits it has great impact very quickly.

What happens on coaching programmes?

Coaches are very individual in their approach. Also coaching is more about the relationship between client and coach so there is no set format or approach. Some coaches work just by telephone and / or email, whilst others stick exclusively to face to face interventions. A lot is Dependant on how you set up the coaching programme from the initial consultation.

Any coaching programme should start with an initial consultation where the programme can be set up. This would include duration of the programme, the sessions and overall outcomes and a whole raft of other areas that your coach will take you through.

After this typically sessions will be about updating from the previous session, clarifying outcomes for the current sessions and then targeted discussions of the current issues. The session will finish with action plans for the client to take away and complete. That said each session can be as individual as the client and the coach want.

Finding a coach

Since coaching is such an individual context it is difficult to fix criteria for finding a coach. Although some general rules of thumb do apply.

Coaching is all about a relationship between the client and the coach. Therefore in the initial consultation if the client does not feel they have great rapport that will allow them to be open and comfortable then it probably is not worth continuing.

It is also worth talking to your prospective coach about previous clients, experience and approach. Often when picking a coach it would be worth talking to previous clients.

The right coach will give you great value for money and could take you further than you had ever achieved without their support. It makes sense to spend a little time to ensure you get the right coach for you. You can find more in depth articles on finding a great coach on my website.
